Horrible Software February 21, 2008 I cannot believe how many hours of my life I have wasted trying to get this upgrade to work. I should have listened to the reviews! Ever since I installed a software update online for iDVD, I have not been able to burn DVDs that can be watched in regular DVD players (video too choppy) but at least I could watch those DVD using my Mac. Now that I've spent money to upgrade to '08, the video quality is SO poor that the DVDs are of no use to me at all. The video won't even preview in iDVD - freezes two seconds in. Complete waste of money. Wait until Apple gets its act together before you waste your money.
Essential for iPhoto February 14, 2008 While this is a much needed update to iLife is doesn't do much for iDVD or iMovie but give it a facelift and maybe some options for ease of use. I'm sure if you use those parts more than I do you might find the update more valuable. The best part of this software is the iPhoto update. I love showing off the new "Events" way of organizing photos. I haven't even began to understand all the new stuff with GarageBand but it does provide a neat way to custom make your own iPhone ringtones without having to pay for them in iTunes. This alone sold me on the software upgrade. If i had a .mac account I would love to use all the new features of iWeb. Any mac user needs this update!!!
Apple keeps going forward February 10, 2008 iLife 08 is the logical progression of Apples previous versions. I do not have OS 10.5 yet, so will wait to install iMovie HD. iPhoto 08 is more powerful and is worth the price alone. I will be trying iWeb soon and it will be my first opportunity to have a web site. To realize the full potential of iLife 08, you really do need a .Mac account. I will sign up as soon as trial version is over. That's it.... If you have a Mac, your in the club, so to speak, iLife 08 and .Mac are pretty reasonable considering of the price of just about everything else these days.
First impressions February 4, 2008 The very first time I hooked up my Canon SD850 digital camera to import into iPhoto 8 what happens? Crash. Reimport. Crash again. Nothing but crashes.
iPhoto then says there are photos that won't import and would I like to reimport. Saying yes results in a crash. Restarting then gives the same "would you like to reimport" message but with double the number of photos. Repeat and it will crash and ask to reimport 4 times the number of photos. At this point I stopped trying, but I assume iPhoto would continue doubling the number of photos to import until I ran out of disk space.
I appears Apple did no real world testing with this product before release. This upgrade has almost been as bad as the transition from iLife 4 to 6 (the difference being that upgrade completely destroyed all my libraries and keywords. I had to manually reimport thousands of photos by hand).
Apple does many things well. Apple also continues to have serious quality control issues that are still not being addressed.

Overall I have liked the features in ilife. iPhoto, iDVD I have used a lot and enjoy. If you have used iMovie they have changed it substantially. I am still not sure whether the changes are all for the better or not. I think if you have never used it before you will find it very handy. Imports video seamlessly from your digital camera. It is missing things I liked from older versions. Such as special effects -they were mostly silly - but kids loved using them to make their home movies.
I have not used the new Garage Band and iWeb.
