2 out of 5 stars Very annoying...   August 23, 2005

I'm a longtime Mac user and this is by far the most annoying 'upgrade'. Spotlight alone makes me so angry I want to scream *&^%$!!! If you're working in a production environment and have to switch a number of drives back and forth you'll not be happy with this horrible software automatically trying to index the volumes... and there's no way to turn it off!!!! Spotlight also lacks some of the functionally of the previous find. As for being faster, I'm not seeing it. After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, BBEdit all run slower... much slower. Widgets... annoying bs to eat up cycles, but at least you can turn them off. On the up side Xcode is running better (thank you). Also there is now a halfway decent dictionary application.

Over all, two steps forward and three back.

5 out of 5 stars It's the BEST OS I've ever used. Period.   August 20, 2005

No hype, seriously it's the best operating system I've EVER used.
I've always been a PC user, and like most PC users I used to bash Macs. About a year ago, I was re-introduced to Macs and to OS X. Last time I had used a Mac it was in 1995 in High School.
I started liking the stability of the OS, the ease of use, the absence of virus & the rest, so I ended up buying a Mac just two months ago as of this review.
Nothing but great things. I'm extremely glad I switched. My XP PC is sitting in a corner. There is no need for me to use it.
The stability of the operating system is unbeliavable. I had my system running straight for 26 1/2 days with no reboots, and it did not slow down, lag or locked up at all.
MAC OS X Tiger is also a safe and secure OS. For once, it doesn't suffer from Virus, Infections, Spyware, Trojans or Adware. Windows XP is, unfortunately plagued by all of the above constantly.
The dashboard is just wonderful, I can have fast access to my calculator, map, encyclopedia, system stats, rss feeds, news, stickie notes. You name it, and there's probably a widget for it.
Spotlight, also a new feature in Tiger, is an extremely fast way of finding information in your computer. It searches as you type, narrowing down the closest match as you enter more information. It could be an email you sent or received in Mail, a contact that you have in your Address Book, any PDF or Word file, bookmarks, music, pictures, keywords...if it's in your Mac, spotlight will find it fast.
If you are a Windows user thinking about the switch, wait no longer. Microsoft will only hope to release an OS as stable and easy to use as Tiger. Yes, there are a few bugs here and there, but that's why Apple updates their software regularly, to enhance and fix the little bugs.
If you're a Mac owner with an earlier version, I strongly suggest investing in Tiger. I hear some people say it isn't worth it if you're running Panther (10.3.x) but Spotlight and Dashboard are very worth it. These are very fast and precise tools that enhance the user's experience, making it work in your Mac a lot more fun and much more productive.
I'll say no more. I'll leave it up to you to try it out. Go to your nearest Apple store and check it out, then come & buy it from Amazon because they have a lower price for it.

When I bought it I supposed was last edition ...but there was already two updated ( 10.4.2). Very good item but I believe the price is too high for what it really worth.

5 out of 5 stars Tiger on an eMac   August 11, 2005
Yup, the reviews are true: Tiger sped up our eMac (albeit with sme extra RAM thrown in for extra insurance). We also use Apple's Airport Extreme and suddenly, the connection is moving better. Spotlight will find just about anything on your drive (be warned if your family searches for your hidden porn). Widgets are fun: I've added a widget, those free-floating little thingies on your desktop that you can pull down with a click, that tells me best gas prices locally (of SOME stations) and another that searches for lyrics of iTunes tunes (found some; others ain't there).

I had heard a lot of back-and-forth about whether it was "worth it" or "stable" and it is, on both accounts.

BAD!!! Norton's AntiVirus and Norton Firewall, leftovers from my OS X.2.4 are incompatible with Tiger; no loss, lemme tell ya, unless you really bought the lousy things and now have nothin' for your money.

Quark Xpress, Adobe's Photoshop and a few other major apps run just; the Tiger changes are pretty invisible... and take it from an old Mac user since the days of OS 6 or before: buy it!
