Office Mac Software December 17, 2008 Purchased this product last month and have had no problems with it. Used Powerpoint for a presentation at work and there were no gliches in pulling it up via PC. Overall a good purchase
MS Office 2008 Home Edition December 17, 2008 I bought this product to replace the MS Office 2004. This new edition updates the capabilities provided in the 2004 edition. My grandchildren love to use this product.
PPT Audio doesn't work December 16, 2008 After recording hours of lecture to convert a class to online, I realized when I looked at the slide timings that some of the slides - randomly - were cut off at 8 or 10 or 30 seconds, even though I had spoken for two minutes. Now, you click a button to move onto the next slide, so it wasn't like there was anything wrong with the audio on my mac - of course not. I wish Mac would check the quality of MS work, because it always sucks. It was frustrating to read similar reviews of people in the same sitauation. I wish I had read these reviews before I purchased this software.
Almost excellent for "general" usage. December 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've read various other reviews of this product, and some bemoan the lack of some "expert" tools. Now, I don't know about the average Joe (the plumber), but for me, I need a good office set that lets me edit Word documents, work with Powerpoint documents etc. I read someone say that Visual Basic and the Analysis Toolpack are not there, but I've never used those tools so they won't be missed. If you DO use those tools, well... then there's a problem!
Test system: MacBook Pro 2.53Ghz (late 2008 model) 4GB DDR3 320GB 7200rpm hard drive OS X 10.5.5
Out of the box, I found Word 08 started quite slowly, especially compared to Word 2007 on the Windows side. An update from Microsoft fixed that. The updater utility included is a pain in the butt. It kept finding incremental upgrades available, but would never let me go from my version to the latest. I always had to download the first huge increment, then the next huge increment etc. Just a pain in the rear!
On the positive side, I actually PREFER the interface on the Mac side vs the Windows side. I could not stand the silly little Windows icon thingamy you had to click on to bring up menus in Office 2007, so this is a relief to see that gone. Everything on Office 2008 for Mac has a distinctive "Leopard" feel about it, and I applaud Microsoft for accomplishing this.
I did have a few incompatibility issues, but only with Powerpoint. I was e-mailed a few .ppt files from a professor, and some of them had overlapping text in the presentation, something that's not present on the Windows side, which was frustrating.
Also, there's a lingering file structure problem with Word 2008. If you're a professor and have a LOT of folders within folders, and then folders within those folders, Word documents will crash when you open and then try to save. It's a really odd state of affairs, but I reproduced the crashing on my wife's new MacBook Pro, by recreating the folder/file structure and loading various Word documents. Word crashes when I open those files and try and save. If I move those files to e.g. my dekstop, there are no issues. Very strange, but again, the average user won't encounter these issues.
Overall, a decent Office suite, and it runs considerably faster than Office 2004 which was designed solely for PowerPC processors which is why it runs quite slowly on newer Intel-powered Macs.
4/5 recommended
Worthy Upgrade December 15, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a worthy upgrade to previous versions of Mac Office. The interface is somewhat consistent with the one used in the Wintel version of Office 2007. You will get all the standard apps that will prove useful for almost all of your everyday tasks (if you want to use Access - go to the Professional version).
Note On The Side: Unless you are using some very high-end features - or are being given this software by your school - you might want to think about investigating OpenOffice 3.x.....the price is right on this software, and you get almost all of the functionality you are likely to use as a student or home user.
