3 out of 5 stars Would be perfect, except...   March 11, 2008

I've had this for a week - it's very fun and easy to use. My primary plan is for this to be my MP3 player to listen to podcasts. 8 GB is plenty for me to hold all my music and queue of podcasts, plus some photos and PDA data.

However, there is one design oversight that drives me crazy about it - the lack of a play/pause button and volume up/down buttons. With any other MP3 player, if I need to quickly pause, or to adjust the volume, I could just slip my hand in the pocket holding the player, and easily find the button.

On the Touch, you have to first turn on the screen, then look to see where the button you need is, then touch it. This is a MAJOR pain for an MP3 player. This product desperately needs three hardkeys on the side: play/pause, vol up, and vol down. If it had that, I would rate it five stars. But not having those really detracts from my enjoyment of it.

I'm thinking I might have been happier with the Nano.

4 out of 5 stars Very close to perfection   March 10, 2008

Just got this on Friday and have played with it many hours now. I love it!

This is by far the best iPod out there. The screen is much better than I hoped for. I watched a movie last night on it and when it was over I realized I was looking at the iPod and not a TV. I now have several gigs of family photos, music, 3 movies (movies rip to about 800MBs)... almost everything I have, loaded up with room left over. Internet and email are great, and this iPod can use the wireless network at the university where I work so I can walk around and have internet access all day. The Google satellite map tool is also fun to use and quite fast. Overall, for my needs this is well worth the $500 hit.

I could only give this 4 stars however... You can not use this like a flash drive without 3rd party software and the lack of a way to pause, skip and control the volume without using the screen is a real pain. So be aware...

1) There is no desktop mounting available on these devices. I wanted to use this as a flash drive too. In fact, this was a consideration when I decided to spend extra for the 32MB version. iPods have always been able to mount as a drive in past versions, so I didn't think to look this up first. There are some 3rd party solutions but they are not free.

2) It would be very nice to have a way to control the Touch without having to touch it. I really dislike having to unlock my iPod Touch to pause or to skip to the next song. It would be nice if Apple could find a way to control pause, skip, volume up, volume down by adding a dongle cable with some control buttons between the headphone port and the headphone jack... OR... add BlueTooth the the Touch.

So I coughed up the money and pulled the trigger on this beautiful piece of hardware. Amazon even threw in a free shuffle! The itouch works as advertised. Photos look great, and the music sounds fantastic through headphones or my car stereo. I can't get enough of flipping through my collection with cover flow with my finger! (For best sound quality, I configured my rips to be 320 kbps MP3s. I mean, you do have the space with the 32 gig model.)

I was a little wary of the web browser. I mean, how fast could it be, right? But once it has picked up a signal it's just about as fast as my DSL connection on my PC! That is the trick, though, picking up a signal. It piggy-backs off whatever signal happens to be around. It can be hit or miss.

The itouch interacts just fine with my PC. I got used to itunes pretty fast. Apple makes everything very intuitive and easy to use.

In short, this is one of the coolest things I have ever owned. Worth every penny!

Something I never really thought I would want or need, but received as a gift-- I love it! I have no complaints about it at all. I would recommend it to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars great device... almost perfect   March 3, 2008

I bought this device about 2 weeks ago and first let me say I have always hated apple not for their design but for things laike not being able to remove the battery (and I just can't stand those white head phones) That being said I really like this device it' slick, thin and pretty. What aplle does well they do very well. There are problems with the touch, atleast there is for me. First the keyboard sucks! I don't know if it is that my fingers are big or what, secondly the fact that you can't take tha battery out still bothers me and lastly Apple commercials say you can read the paper while traveling with the touch or check e-mail, utubes etc. but just remember (For those who don't know) you have to be in a hot spot in order to do this if not it is useless. all in all although I am still an apple hater I do however concede to the design of this device.
