Switched from PC and never going back! December 1, 2007 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
First of all I'd just like to refer anyone interested in this product to the excellent first review posted. It helped me make my decision and was very exhaustive and detailed. I purchased this iMac a few days ago and have basically not stopped using it since it arrived! It's fast, easy to use, gorgeous to look at, and just makes using the computer fun and enjoyable again. I don't feel like I'm doing work anymore!
The computer arrived in brand new condition exactly as described with an iLife'08 pack-in, and with the Leopard Up-To-Date program, there has never really been a better time to pick up this previous generation version brand new before they're gone forever.
Oh yeah, and the wireless keyboard and mouse are incredible. We can surf the web, watch movies and do anything else from up to 30 feet away which might sound a little ridiculous, but just wait until you try it! It's just about the coolest thing ever. Thank you Amazon and Apple!
What a deal! December 1, 2007 to clear up any confusion, this is a NEW 20" White iMac 2.16 ghz intel core 2 duo, with 1gb ram, superdrive, wireless keyboard (old style), wireless mouse, iLife 08 drop in, and OS X Tiger (w/ option to upgarde to Leopard for $10).
with all of the negative reviews out there about the screens on the new series of iMac, i think this was a very smart purchase. the machine is beautiful, performs great, and is as advertised. for $1,200, you really can't beat it. i do a bit of graphic designing on the side and really couldnt risk buying one of the new iMacs w/ the display that it has... so i'm grateful to find this baby on amazon. free shipping & no applicable sales tax too! :)
thanks to the review above who really outlined everything - was incredibly helpful in making this purchase.
CONFUSED! Has someone bought this particular $1,199.99 machine? November 30, 2007 0 out of 8 found this review helpful
Like the reviewer above, I'm confused as to what exactly is being sold here. This computer seems identical to the MA589LL version for $1799 except for the "wireless keyboard, mouse" addition in the description and the "monitor is being sold separately" line which doesn't make any sense as it is an integrated unit so there are no separate monitors to speak of. I've called and emailed cust. service and although they were very nice they couldn't help at all. Nobody could explain why it says that the monitor is sold separately and why the price is lower. I was also told that the order fulfillment centers are in a different location from the cust. service offices and they have no way of telling exactly what is being shipped. Now, that's pretty ridiculous yet it is sadly the reality we have to deal with.
I'd love to buy this but I don't want to chance it in case there's something wrong here. So, please, anyone who bought this particular $1199 MA759LL model please report what exactly did you receive. Is this is indeed the whole, brand new computer as advertised or did some error occur? Maybe it's an open box or refurb? If so, it is not indicated anywhere on here. Many thanks in advance!

I took a chance and bought this, and it is everything the others have said about it so I withdraw my earlier comment about it not having a monitor, etc. Not only is it the cheapest white iMac 20" available, it has the optional wireless keyboard & mouse. (unfortunately it interferes with my wireless security camera) Make sure you get online with it immediately and download the updates from Apple, also get the Leopard upgrade before the offer expires. If you also have XP Pro on another computer, you can download a free Microsoft program that will control it from within a Mac window. (haven't tried it yet) I give it 5 stars, unfortunately I can't change the number I gave it earlier.
THE way to go if you want an iMac November 19, 2007 27 out of 27 found this review helpful
Here's the deal - there are 4 relevant points here:
Point #1 - The PC vs. Mac thing. I've used both for years, and Mac OS X (Tiger or Leopard) is so clearly the better operating system (over any flavor of Windows) it's absurd. Combined with the included software, it's the way to go not only for people who aren't computer experts, but for those who are. If you want to know why, there are plenty of sites with a ton of info about it.
Point #2 - iMacs have gotten good enough for MOST applications that a Mac Pro is unnecessary. I've had a Mac desktop (the big aluminum tower) for 4 years - it's been running almost continuously for that period of time without missing a beat - and back then I felt the tower was necessary for what I wanted. Now the iMac crushes my old box and I can do digital audio as well as graphic work with no problems. THe ONLY place where an iMac may fall down a bit is in gaming. The video card isn't what is available in most PC's and it's not upgradeable. However, I don't game on my Mac very much, and haven't noticed an issue when I have. So iMacs are a fantastic way to get an amazing computer that works and works.
Point #3 - There are some MAJOR problems with the new aluminum iMacs. Primarily the 20" screen is no good at all for graphics. Apple got arrogant, and when they went from the white iMac to the aluminum the switched from an 8 bit S-IPS display to a 6 bit TF display. Now, I know with the glossy surface it LOOKS nice, but look carefully. It is considerably lighter at the top than at the bottom and a solid color actually changes from light to dark. This eliminates that screen for use in photography or serious graphic design. I know that some people might not care and some might never notice (depending on how they use the computer), but it matters to me. Also, because of the 6 vs. 8 bit screen, some colors actually become graduated. Both issues are well documented all over the web, so don't take my word for it, google it. There are photos up on photo sites and tons of comments on photography sites as well as the Apple support forums. Of course you can also simply go to an Apple store and put a solid background color on any current iMac (it's most obvious with the medium dark grey) and see for yourself. There are other reported issues with lockups etc, though I won't detail them as they will likely get fixed with firmware updates. The panel though cannot be changed - therefore the aluminum iMacs are right out for me. (As an aside, the 24" panel is a better type than the 20", but it gets lighter on the right as opposed to the left - still no good).
In contrast, the white iMacs had the same VERY high end panel as Apple used in the cinema display, so when Leopard was released and I decided to move to an Intel mac, that was the one I wanted. The speed difference is in all likelihood not noticeable, and the only other difference is max ram: 3 gig in white vs. 4 gig in aluminum. Not enough of a difference for me to put up with an unusable screen.
Point #4 - You can buy refurbished 20" white iMacs from Apple for 1100 bucks. Or you can buy a NEW one from Amazon for 1250 (now just 1200 bucks - a steal!). The new one comes with the wireless keyboard and mouse (and not the short aluminum wireless either - that one is sexy, but has no number pad - the one in this package is the full sized white one with the number pad) as well as an iLife '08 pack-in - which is great because the refurb only comes with iLife '06. This one also comes with Omni Outliner which is sweet. Finally, this does NOT come with Leopard on a DVD - but for $9.99 you can order it from Apple and update your new iMac to the latest OS.
As for mine, I just increased the RAM (though frankly for many users the stock 1GB will be ok) and it flies. No problem in audio or video, I'm happy as a clam. All in all, not only a great computer, but a great deal - and one of the only ways to get a useable iMac brand new to boot!
